How to Use Custom Fields
Standard contact fields — name, email, phone — cover the basics, but your business almost certainly tracks details specific to what you do. Custom fields let you capture exactly that, per contact or per opportunity.
Creating a custom field
- Go to Settings > Custom Fields.
- Choose which object the field belongs to: Contact or Opportunity.
- Click Create Field and choose a field type — short text, long text, dropdown, date picker, phone, email, radio buttons, checkboxes, URL, and more.
- Fill in the field's details, and assign it to a folder.
- Review the live preview.
- Confirm to create the field.
An important constraint
Once you create a field as a Contact field or an Opportunity field, you can't switch its type later.
Where custom fields show up
They can be added to forms, referenced in workflows, displayed on pipeline/opportunity cards, and inserted into templates as merge fields.
A practical example
A gym might add a "Membership Tier" dropdown field on contacts, then build a workflow that sends different onboarding emails depending on which tier a new member selected.
