Letting Visitors Download a File from a Button, Image or Icon

The Download File action turns a button, image or SVG graphic into a one-click download. It suits lead magnets, brochures, price sheets and any asset you want delivered without sending people to another site.

Set It Up

  1. Go to Sites, pick Funnels or Websites, and open the page in the editor.
  2. Select the element.
  3. Choose the download option in its settings:
    • Button: under Button Actions, set Link To to Download File.
    • Image: set Image Action to Download File.
    • SVG: set SVG Action to Download File.
  4. Click Select File and pick a file from your media library, or upload a new one.
  5. Type a clean name into File Name, such as Spring-Pricing-Guide.pdf. This is the name visitors see when the file saves.
  6. Save and preview.

Limits to Know

  • One file per element. To offer several, compress them into a single ZIP.
  • The file must live in your media library and be within its upload size limit.
  • Only fixed files work, not dynamic links.
  • Files download directly rather than opening a preview. If you want people to view a PDF in the browser, use an Open URL in New Tab action instead.
  • Some mobile browsers ask which app should open the file.

Troubleshooting

  • Nothing happens: confirm the action is selected and a file is attached.
  • Broken link or 404: the file may have been renamed or deleted in the media library.
  • Slow download: compress large files.

Downloads are not tracked individually. To capture who wants the file, place the button after a form so the submission starts a Workflow.

Good to know: Do not delete or replace a file in the media library without updating the element, or the saved link will break.
