Create and Edit XML Sitemaps for Your Domain

A sitemap lists the pages you want search engines to find. It will not guarantee ranking, but it helps new or large sites get discovered.

Do you need one?

Probably, if your site is new, has many pages, has little internal linking or relies on media. A very small, well-linked site may be fine without it.

Find the settings

  1. Go to Sites and click the small gear icon at the top right (or open Settings > Domains).
  2. Click Manage next to your domain.
  3. On the Connected Products page, open the three-dot menu next to the website or funnel.
  4. Choose XML Sitemap.

Build the sitemap

  1. Expand a website or funnel with the arrow on its right, or tick the box to include every page.
  2. Select only the pages you want crawled. One domain can host several sites, so choose across all of them.
  3. Click Proceed.
  4. Click Add New if this is your first sitemap, then confirm to generate it.

Submit to Google

  1. Add and verify your domain in Google Search Console.
  2. Open the Sitemaps report.
  3. Enter your sitemap address (usually /sitemap.xml after your domain) and submit.

Important

Leaving a page out of the sitemap does not hide it. A page linked elsewhere can still be crawled, so use the page's search engine settings to block it.

Good to know: Regenerate the sitemap whenever you add important new pages.
