Build Recipient Segments for Email Campaigns

A recipient segment is a saved, rule-based audience you build right inside the email campaign flow. Contacts join or leave the segment automatically as their details change, and you can reuse it in later campaigns.

What you can filter on

Segments can combine conditions such as tags, contact fields, email activity and engagement. You can also mix in ready-made audience conditions, for example "engaged in the last 7 days", next to your own rules.

Build a segment

  1. Go to Marketing > Emails > Campaigns and create or open a campaign.
  2. In the builder, click Send or Schedule.
  3. In the Recipient (To) area, choose Build Segments.
  4. Add your first filter, for example a tag that marks contacts as customers.
  5. Click Add Filter to require another condition at the same time (AND logic).
  6. Click Add OR Filter to create an alternative group of conditions (OR logic).
  7. Click Save to keep the segment for reuse, or continue to review and send.

Segments compared with Smart Lists

Both are dynamic and rule-based. Smart Lists live in Contacts and are for working with your database. Segments live in the campaign builder and are for choosing who receives a particular email.

Neither lets you add people by hand. If you need manual control, apply a tag to the people you want and base your segment on that tag.

Good to know: Name saved segments by what they target, such as "Customers active this month", so teammates can pick the right one quickly.
