Test Ideas by Splitting Contacts Randomly with the Split Action
The Split action sends contacts down different paths in percentages you choose. It is the simplest way to A/B test emails, texts or follow-up timing.
How it works
- Distribution Type: Random Split is the only option.
- Paths: up to 5, each with a name and a percentage.
- The percentages must total exactly 100 or the action cannot be saved. A path set to 0 percent receives no one.
- Once a contact is assigned to a path, they always return to that same path if they re-enter the split.
Set it up
- Click +, then choose Internal > Split.
- Select Random Split.
- Add paths, name them such as "Headline A", and set each percentage.
- Check that the total is 100 percent, then save.
- Build the steps under each path and publish.
Reading the results
Open the action's Statistics tab, or turn on Stats View, to see how many contacts entered each path.
Examples
- A/B test: 50 percent receive an email with headline A and 50 percent receive headline B.
- Lead routing: 75 percent to an experienced rep and 25 percent to a trainee.
- Timing test: half of contacts get the follow-up the next morning, and half after two days.
When to use If/Else instead
Split is purely random. If you want to separate contacts by a rule, such as order size or tag, use If/Else.
Changing a live split
Edits apply to contacts who enter afterward, not to those already assigned.
Good to know: Change only one thing per test, such as the headline, so you can trust which version performed better.
