Assign or Unassign Deal Owners in Workflows
Two actions control who owns an opportunity: Add Owner to Opportunity and Remove Owner from Opportunity. Both need an opportunity in context, either from an opportunity trigger or an earlier Find Opportunity step. If none exists, they are skipped.
Add Owner to Opportunity
- User: the team member who becomes the owner.
- Only Apply to Unassigned Opportunities: on keeps any existing owner. Off overwrites the current owner.
Example: Find Opportunity with value above 5000, then assign the opportunity to your senior rep with overwriting turned on.
Remove Owner from Opportunity
Clears the owner, leaving the deal unassigned until another step reassigns it. If the deal is already unassigned, nothing changes. When both a triggering opportunity and a found opportunity exist, the found one is used.
Example: When status changes to Closed, unassign the deal for administrative review.
Sync with contact ownership
If your opportunity settings sync contact and opportunity owners, changing the opportunity owner also changes the contact owner, and removing it can remove the contact owner. With sync off, only the opportunity changes.
Set up
- Add the trigger or a Find Opportunity step.
- Click + and pick the owner action.
- Choose the user and toggle, or just name the removal.
- Save and publish.
Good to know: Even when Find Opportunity could match many deals, only one, the earliest or latest, is ever changed.
