Change Stored Custom Values on the Fly with Update Custom Value
Update Custom Value replaces the content of one of your custom values during a workflow, so every message that uses it from then on shows the new text. Typical examples are a calendar link, a promo code or a discount rate.
Fields
- Action Name: for example "Update loyalty tier".
- Custom Value: pick the one to change.
- Current Value: shown for reference when available.
- New Value: a fixed value or a dynamic variable from earlier steps.
The new value is available to later steps as soon as the action finishes.
Set it up
- Open Automation > Workflows and add a trigger.
- Click + and search for Update Custom Value.
- Choose the custom value and enter the new value.
- Save, test and publish.
Examples
- Tag added: when "VIP" is added to a contact, change the Discount Rate value from 10% to 15%.
- Booking link swap: change the calendar link value to a different calendar for an upcoming promotion.
- Counter: combine with Math Operation to add 50 points to a balance, then store the result.
Helpful combinations
- If/Else first, so the update runs only when the current value is, say, "Bronze".
- A custom code or webhook step that returns data, which you then store as the new value.
- Triggers such as Form Submitted, Opportunity Status Changed or Order Fulfilled.
Caution
A custom value is shared by your whole account. If you change it for one contact's journey, every other workflow that uses it will see the change too.
Good to know: For information that belongs to a single person, update a contact field instead of a custom value.
