Change a Trigger Link Destination with Custom Values

If you run the same message every month or quarter but the offer page changes, you can avoid rebuilding your emails and workflows. Point the trigger link at a Custom Value, then simply update that value whenever the destination changes.

How It Works

The trigger link is the stable thing your messages contain. Its destination is a Custom Value, which you edit centrally. Every new click goes to whatever the value currently holds.

Set It Up in the Right Order

  1. Create a Custom Value for your offer page, for example "Current Offer URL", and enter today's link.
  2. Go to Marketing, then Trigger Links, and click Add Link.
  3. Name the link and, for its destination, insert the Custom Value.
  4. Save the trigger link.
  5. In your email, SMS, or workflow, insert the trigger link itself into the message body.
  6. Send a test and click it to confirm it lands on the right page.
  7. Next promotion, update only the Custom Value.

Important Rules

  • Put the trigger link in the message, not the raw Custom Value. Using the Custom Value directly will not log the click or run automations.
  • Changes are not retroactive in an unexpected way: links sent earlier follow the destination in place when each person clicks, so keep expired offers pointed somewhere safe.
  • Use a clear naming convention so you remember which link maps to which campaign.

Ideas

  • Monthly special or seasonal landing page.
  • Rotating webinar replay link.
  • A "current catalog" link that always leads to the newest PDF.

Good to know: Test with your own contact after every Custom Value edit so you know the redirect is correct before the next send.
