Previewing Custom Fields Before You Send

Personalization only works if the merge fields fill in correctly. Preview shows how fields such as first name or full address will appear, before a single message goes out.

Why preview

  • Catch broken or empty personalization early.
  • Skip building fake contacts just for testing.
  • Avoid embarrassing greetings like Hi , with a missing name.

Previewing

  1. Open the email in the builder at Marketing > Emails.
  2. Click Preview in the top menu bar, next to Save. It no longer hides in the three-dot menu.
  3. Read through the email and confirm every custom field shows the expected value.
  4. Close preview to fix anything that looks off, then preview again.
  5. When satisfied, move on to send or schedule.

Addresses

Address fields render in full during preview. If your email uses the full address field, test with it to confirm the output matches the contact record.

Troubleshooting

  • A blank value usually means the contact has no data in that field. Add data, or choose a fallback.
  • A literal field name displayed in the text suggests a typo in the custom value.
  • If results still look wrong, send a test email to an inbox you control.

Extra checks

Preview is a quick visual review. Follow it with a test send so you can see real-world rendering in an inbox, including links, images and attachments.

Good to know: Test with at least one contact who has every field filled and another who has several fields empty.
