India Phone Numbers & Voice Calling

Calling with India-based numbers works differently from most other countries because of local telecom regulations, and it currently ships with a reduced feature set.

Access

India numbers are a limited-access feature — request access first, then wait for approval before submitting the regulatory paperwork.

Requirements

Your account needs to be registered in India, and you'll need to submit:

  • A valid Certificate of Incorporation
  • A valid GST Registration Certificate

Numbers approved this way cannot be transferred outside of India.

Calling limitations

  • Outbound calls can only be placed to domestic Indian numbers — both legs of the call (including the audio/media session) must originate and terminate within India, or the call may be blocked even if both numbers are Indian.
  • Inbound calls can only route to a forwarding number, not directly to the web or mobile app.
  • Call recording, transcription, transfers, IVR menus, and Voice AI are not currently supported for India calling.

Messaging

Standard SMS and MMS are not available on India numbers. WhatsApp Business Messaging is supported once you complete Meta's business approval process.

Setup process

  1. Request access and get approved.
  2. Complete a Regulatory Bundle for India and get it approved.
  3. Purchase your India number from Settings > Phone System.

Given the current limitations, treat India numbers as suited for basic domestic voice and WhatsApp messaging rather than a full-featured line — plan your call routing and reporting expectations accordingly.
