Set Canonical URLs for Your Blog and Posts
A canonical URL tells search engines which address is the "official" version of a page. It matters when the same content appears at more than one address, for example a post that also shows in a category list, or an article republished from another site.
Why it matters
- Search engines avoid treating copies as competing pages.
- Ranking signals from links are combined onto one address.
- The version you prefer is the one shown in results.
Set canonicals for the blog, categories and authors
- Go to Sites > Blog and open your blog.
- Continue to the blog settings and choose Canonical Links.
- Fill in the URL Slug (your main blog address), the Category URL and the Author URL.
- Save.
Set a canonical for one post
- Open or create a post and click Continue to reach the final step.
- Find the Canonical Link field.
- Paste the URL of the original or preferred version.
- Click Save, Schedule or Publish.
You can also update the canonical on a post that is already published; reopen it, change the field, and choose Update Post.
Check your work
Open the live post, view the page source and look for a rel="canonical" tag in the head section. It should show the address you entered.
Good to know: Leave the field empty for posts that originate on your own blog; the post's own address is used by default.
