Use the Order Submitted Trigger for Purchases and Upsells
The Order Submitted trigger starts a workflow when someone completes checkout on a one-step or two-step order form, and again when they accept an upsell. It carries rich order details, so you can send tailored confirmations or follow-ups based on what was bought.
When it fires
It runs once per checkout submission, even if the cart holds several products, and runs again for each upsell purchase. A customer who buys products A and B, then adds upsell C, starts two runs.
It applies to current-generation Sites funnels. Older funnels need to be upgraded first.
Required setting for upsells
Turn on Allow Multiple in Workflow Settings. Without it, a contact who is still inside the workflow from the first purchase cannot enter again when they buy the upsell. For the same reason, avoid long Wait steps in a workflow that handles upsells.
Filters and conditions
Narrow the trigger by:
- Product or Price
- Order Source (the order form)
- Submission Type: Primary, Bump, or Upsell
- Funnel, Page, or funnel-level product
Inside the workflow, If/Else conditions can check order source, product, payment gateway, order total, submission type, or funnel. Order merge fields, including cart total, coupon code, discount, order ID, and customer details, appear in the picker only when this trigger is present.
Send a confirmation email
- Build an email template and add the Shopping Cart element.
- Add a Send Email action to the workflow and choose that template.
- Product lines, images, quantities, and prices fill in automatically.
Upload product images in Payments > Products so customers see your pictures rather than a placeholder.
Good to know: Set the filter to Upsell to launch a thank-you sequence only for add-on purchases, and Primary for the standard welcome.
