Call Tracking with Number Pools
A number pool shows a different tracking phone number to different website visitors depending on where they came from, so when they call, you know exactly which campaign, page, or source drove that call.
How it works
You assign a pool of numbers to your site. When a visitor from a particular source (a specific ad campaign, landing page, or referral) loads your site, the tracking script swaps the number shown on the page for one from the pool. Whichever number they call, it forwards to your real phone number — but the fact that they dialed that specific tracking number tells you where they came from.
Setting up a number pool
- Go to Settings > Phone System > Phone Numbers > Add Number Pool.
- Choose Visitor Activity to define which visitors get tracked (e.g., by traffic source or landing page).
- Name the pool and set its size — a pool needs at least 4 numbers to rotate through.
- Enter your forwarding number (where calls actually ring) and the criteria for the swapping number shown to visitors.
- Choose the numbers for the pool — local numbers matching your forwarding number's area code, toll-free, or numbers from any region.
- Optionally add a whisper message (heard only by you, not the caller) and set call recording preferences.
- Copy the tracking snippet from the pool and add it to your website's code.
- Test in an incognito browser to confirm the number swap is working before relying on it.
Managing numbers within a pool
Once a pool exists, you can freely reorganize it without contacting support:
- Move a number from one pool to another.
- Return a number to your general number list without deleting it.
- Delete an individual number from a pool while keeping the rest intact.
- Pull numbers from your general inventory into an existing pool.
All changes are logged, so you can review what moved and when if a pool's behavior ever needs auditing.
