Add UTM Tracking to Email Campaign Links

UTM parameters are short labels added to the end of a link so analytics tools can tell which visits came from your emails. Turn them on and you can see in your analytics which campaign drove traffic and conversions.

The default parameters

  • utm_source: always set to "email" and required, so your own reporting stays consistent.
  • utm_medium: required, but you can change the value. The default is "email marketing".
  • utm_campaign: optional. You can fill it from options such as the campaign name and send date.
  • Up to five extra parameters of your own, entered as plain text.

Turn on UTM tracking by default

  1. Go to Marketing > Emails > Campaigns and click the Settings gear.
  2. Open the Tracking section.
  3. Switch on the default UTM parameters.
  4. Edit the medium or campaign values if needed.
  5. Click Add Custom Parameter to add your own name and value.
  6. Tick the parameters you want applied to your campaigns.
  7. Click Save.

To switch tracking off for a single campaign, use the tracking toggle on its Send or Schedule page.

Naming advice

  • Keep personal details out of parameters.
  • Stick with the three main parameters unless you need more.
  • Parameters are case sensitive, so choose one capitalization style.
  • Use underscores rather than spaces.

Where it will not work

  • Links that use trigger links are not tagged in this version.
  • Links must be valid and start with https://, including those stored in a custom value.
  • Send a real test campaign to verify, since previews are not a reliable check.

Good to know: Run one small test send to a teammate and inspect the final link in your browser before launching to the full list.
