Wait for a Trigger Link Click in a Workflow
A common automation pattern is "send a message with a link, wait to see if the contact clicks, then act". Workflows can pause on a trigger link click and branch based on whether it happened.
The Pattern
- Send an SMS or email that includes a trigger link.
- Add a Wait step set to wait for the trigger link click.
- If the contact clicks, continue down the "clicked" path.
- If they do not click in time, take the "timeout" path.
Build It
- Create the trigger link under Marketing, then Trigger Links.
- Open Automation, then Workflows, and create or edit a workflow.
- Add a Send SMS or Send Email action and insert the trigger link in the body.
- Add a Wait action after it.
- Choose the option to wait for a trigger link click and select your link.
- Turn on the Timeout toggle and set how long to wait before moving on.
- Add actions to each path. For example, clicked contacts get a survey; others get a reminder.
- Test with your own contact, then publish.
About the Timeout Toggle
With Timeout enabled, the Wait step is skipped once the time you set has passed. Without it, a contact who never clicks stays stuck at that step.
Ready-Made Example
The workflow recipes include an appointment confirmation, reminder, survey, and review request sequence that uses this pattern. Review it to see how clicks move contacts forward.
Ideas
- Click to confirm an appointment, then request a review.
- Click to download a guide, then tag as "interested".
- No click after 2 days, then send a second reminder.
Good to know: You can also use a "link clicked" workflow trigger on a specific link when the click should start a brand new workflow rather than continue an existing one.
