Automatic Updates for WordPress Core, Plugins, and Themes

Outdated software is one of the main reasons WordPress sites get hacked or break. Vendi Today lets you turn on automatic updates separately for WordPress itself, each plugin, and each theme.

Core updates

You can choose how the WordPress core software updates itself:

  • Off: nothing updates automatically.
  • Latest Version: every new release is installed, including major ones.
  • Minor Version: only small maintenance and security releases are installed.

To set it:

  1. Go to Sites > WordPress and open your site.
  2. Open Advanced Settings, then WordPress Management.
  3. Find Core Update Preferences and select an option.

Plugin updates

  1. Open the site and go to Plugins.
  2. Find the plugin in the Installed Plugins list.
  3. Switch its auto-update toggle ON or OFF.

Theme updates

  1. Open the site and go to Themes.
  2. Pick the theme you want to configure.
  3. Switch its auto-update toggle ON or OFF.

Choosing a sensible policy

  • Switch automatic updates on for well-maintained plugins and for minor core versions; this prevents most security problems with very little risk.
  • Leave major updates and complex plugins, such as page builders or store extensions, on manual so you can test them first in a staging copy.
  • You can set each plugin differently, so there is no need for an all-or-nothing approach.

Back up the site before enabling broad automatic updates, as a rare conflict between an update and another plugin can break a page.

Good to know: Use the Minor Version core setting as a safe default; it delivers security fixes without surprising layout changes.
