Show Order Items and Other Lists in Messages and Sheets
Some workflow data arrives as a list, such as the products in a cart or an array from an inbound webhook. Dropping a raw list into an email looks messy. You can format it into clean, readable text instead.
The quick way: the list formatter
- Click into any supported text field in your workflow, such as an email body or a Google Sheets column.
- Open the Custom Value picker and select the list value.
- Choose which field to pull from each item, for example title.
- Choose how the result should look: comma-separated, bulleted, numbered, or a custom separator.
- Optionally set a fallback for when the list is empty.
- Check the preview and click Insert.
The manual way: pluck and join
Two helpers let you do the same thing by hand:
- pluck extracts one field from each item:
{{ pluck order.line_items "title" }} - join combines the results with a separator:
{{ join (pluck order.line_items "title") ", " }}
Fields available on order items include title, image, price, quantity, line subtotal, line discount, line price, and metadata such as product ID, price ID, and order or invoice ID.
Example: log orders to a spreadsheet
- Trigger: Order Submitted.
- Action: Google Sheets > Create Spreadsheet Row.
- Map Customer to the contact's first name, Email to the contact's email, and Products to the joined list from above.
- Publish and place a test order to confirm the row looks right.
Troubleshooting
- Blank output usually means the trigger doesn't supply that list. Add a trigger that provides it.
- Check for straight quotes around field names when typing helpers by hand.
- Preview before inserting so you know the formatting is what you expect.
Good to know: Use the formatter for emails and texts, and keep manual helpers for cases that need a very specific layout.
