Course Progress Triggers: Category Completed and Portal Login

Two learning-related triggers help you respond to what your members do: finishing a category of content and logging in to the course portal.

Category Completed

This trigger fires when a contact finishes all the content in a category of a product or course. Use it for completion emails, certificates and next-step recommendations.

  • Filter: choose specific products or categories, such as "Sprint Course" or "Marathon Course". With no filter, any completed category fires it.
  • Example: a learner completes the first three lessons, so send a congratulatory email, notify the instructor and tag them "Early progress".

Courses User Login

This trigger fires each time a member logs in to the legacy course portal. It has no required filters, only a name.

  • Example actions: send a welcome-back message, or use a Condition and a Wait to nudge members who have not logged in recently with a special offer.

Set either one up

  1. Open Automation > Workflows and create a workflow.
  2. Click Add New Trigger and find the trigger under the courses group.
  3. Select Category Completed or Courses User Login.
  4. Name it, for instance "Course 1 category complete".
  5. Add filters for products or categories, if desired.
  6. Click Save Trigger, add actions, test, and publish.

Ideas

  • Reward progress: at each category, send a short message with the next module link.
  • Upsell: completing the final category triggers an offer for an advanced course.
  • Check-in: tag members who complete early so your team can personally congratulate them.

Related automation guides cover certificates and offer access, which pair well with these triggers.

Tips

  • Create one trigger per course so messages mention the right content.
  • Login triggers can run very often, so keep their actions light, such as adding a tag or updating a field.

Good to know: Pair Category Completed with an access trigger for the next product to build a smooth multi-course journey.
