Manage Files With a WordPress File Manager Plugin
A file manager plugin lets you browse, upload, and edit your site's files from inside the WordPress admin area, so you do not need a separate transfer program. It is a convenient option when you only need to make a quick change.
Why use one
- Simplicity: one familiar screen with a folder tree and file list.
- Safety: traditional FTP sends passwords in readable text, whereas a plugin works behind your encrypted admin login.
- Speed: edit a file in a built-in code editor and save it right away.
Free versions cover the basics. Premium editions of popular plugins add features such as private folders and permissions that differ by user role, which is helpful for teams.
Install a file manager plugin
- Open the WordPress admin area with the WP Admin button in Sites > WordPress.
- Go to Plugins > Add New.
- Search for WP File Manager and select it.
- Click Install Now, then Activate.
- Open it from the left menu.
Common tasks
- Edit a core file: locate it in the root folder, right-click, and choose the code editor.
- Hidden files: if a file such as
.htaccessis not visible, enable Show Hidden Files in the plugin's settings. - Upload files: drag them into the correct folder, or use the upload button.
Staying safe
A file manager gives you the same power as FTP, so a wrong edit or deletion can take your site down. Back up first, change one thing at a time, and if something breaks, restore from your latest stable backup in the hosting dashboard.
Some plugins in this category are on the restricted list for performance reasons, so if your chosen plugin is rejected, try another well-reviewed file manager.
Good to know: Remove or deactivate the file manager when you are finished, since leaving a powerful tool installed widens what an attacker could do.
