Publishing an llms.txt File for AI Search and Assistants
An llms.txt file is a plain-text, Markdown summary of your site placed at the root of your domain. It gives AI assistants and search tools a short guide to what you do and which pages matter, much like robots.txt does for classic crawlers. Some audits, including PageSpeed checks for AI browsing, look for it.
What a Good File Contains
Use valid Markdown with one # heading for your site name, a one-or-two sentence summary in a quote block, then ## sections listing key links with a short description each, for example Key Pages (services, pricing, contact), Resources (help center, blog) and an Optional section for lower-priority pages. Keep it accurate and limit it to public pages.
Publish It
Each connected domain or subdomain has its own file.
- Go to Settings > Domains and URL Redirects.
- Find the domain and click Manage.
- Click the three dots beside the connected product and choose Edit.
- Scroll to the llms.txt box and paste your Markdown.
- Click Save. It is live immediately.
Check It
Open https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. For a subdomain, use the full address such as https://offers.yourdomain.com/llms.txt.
Common Questions
- It does not replace your XML sitemap. Use both.
- It does not guarantee appearances in AI answers, since each platform makes its own choices.
- New pages are not added automatically, so update the file when you publish, rename or remove important pages.
Good to know: Write the summary as if explaining your business to a stranger in two sentences, since that is exactly how it will be used.
