Create a Plain Text Email Template
Not every email needs columns, images and buttons. Sometimes a short, personal note performs better. The plain text editor lets you write that kind of message without any visual layout getting in the way.
When plain text works well
- One-to-one style messages such as a friendly check-in or a personal welcome.
- Follow-ups after a call, a form submission or a purchase.
- Text-heavy updates where the words matter more than the design.
- Any message that should feel like it came from a person rather than a newsletter.
Create a plain text template
- Go to Marketing > Emails > Templates.
- Click + New and choose to start a template from scratch.
- When the editor choices appear, select Plain Text.
- Type your message. Use personalization such as the contact's first name where it helps.
- Click Preview or send a test to yourself to check how it reads.
- Click Save Template.
You can also pick the plain text option when you add an email step to a Workflow, so automated messages can follow the same simple style.
How it differs from the other editors
| Editor | Best for |
|---|---|
| Plain Text | Simple, conversational messages |
| Drag-and-drop design editor | Branded layouts with images, columns and buttons |
| Code editor | Hand-written HTML |
Plain text is also separate from the quick compose option, which is a lightweight way to write a one-off message.
Good to know: Send yourself a test before launch. Simple messages are easy to get right, but it is still worth checking how merge fields fill in.
