Adding GIFs to Emails

Animated GIFs add motion and personality to a message. You can place them in two ways.

Two places a GIF works

  • As an image: use the Image element exactly as you would for a photo.
  • As a video thumbnail: use the Video element and set a GIF as its preview so the thumbnail moves before someone clicks.

Adding a GIF as an image

  1. Go to Marketing > Emails and open a campaign or template.
  2. Drag an Image element into your layout.
  3. Click it and upload your GIF file, up to 10MB. You can also paste its URL.
  4. Add alt text and an optional link.
  5. Preview and send a test.

Using a GIF in a video thumbnail

  1. Drag a Video element into your layout.
  2. Enter your video link.
  3. Replace the thumbnail with your GIF file (up to 10MB).
  4. Save and test.

Keeping it light

Big animations load slowly, especially on mobile data, and some inbox apps only show the first frame. Make sure the first frame carries the message by itself, and compress the file where you can.

Accessibility

Fast flashing can be uncomfortable for some readers. Choose gentle motion and always include alt text describing the animation.

Good to know: Send a test to a few different inbox apps. If one shows only a still frame, the message should still make sense.
