Start a Workflow When a Contact Tag Is Added or Removed
Tags are the simplest way to label Contacts, and they also make a handy remote control for automation. The Contact Tag trigger starts a workflow the moment a tag lands on a contact or is taken off one, so a single click in your Contacts list can kick off a whole sequence.
How the trigger behaves
The trigger watches for tag changes of any kind. Without a filter, it fires for both additions and removals. Add a filter to narrow it to one direction, and optionally to one specific tag, so your workflow only reacts to the labels you care about.
Ways a tag can change
Any of these will start a workflow that uses the trigger:
- Manually in Contacts: select one or more contacts, then use Add Tag or Remove Tag.
- By another workflow: a published workflow that reaches an Add Tag or Remove Tag action.
- From an outside tool: connected apps such as Zapier can add tags. They cannot remove them.
- During a CSV import: include a column headed "tags" (several tags can share one cell, separated by commas), or choose tags in the import's advanced options.
Set it up
- Go to Automation > Workflows and open or create a workflow.
- Click Add New Trigger and choose Contact Tag.
- Under filters, pick Tag Added or Tag Removed.
- Choose the tag name you want to react to.
- Save the trigger, build your actions, and Publish the workflow.
Watch out for these situations
- Importing a CSV with duplicates turned off updates existing contacts, including their tags, which can fire the trigger for people who already existed.
- If a workflow adds a tag that triggers another workflow, make sure the two don't keep triggering each other in a loop.
Good to know: Use a dedicated "enrol me" tag per workflow, such as "start-onboarding", so your team can launch automation by tagging a contact instead of editing the workflow.
