Move Deals Forward with the Pipeline Stage Changed Trigger

A deal moving from one stage to another is a natural moment for automation. The Pipeline Stage Changed trigger starts a workflow when an opportunity changes stage, whether it moves forward, backward or into another pipeline.

What fires it

The workflow runs when an opportunity is dragged to a new stage on the board, updated in the opportunity record, or moved by another workflow action.

Filters

  • In Pipeline: only opportunities in the selected pipeline, such as "Enterprise Sales".
  • Pipeline Stage: only when the deal enters a chosen stage.
  • Assigned To: deals owned by a particular user.
  • Lead Value: deals above or below an amount.
  • Lost Reason: when a deal lands in Lost with a chosen reason, such as "Budget".
  • Tag: deals carrying specific tags, with Any of and None of operators.

Set it up

  1. Open Automation > Workflows and create a workflow.
  2. Click Add New Trigger and select Pipeline Stage Changed.
  3. Name it, for example "Proposal sent".
  4. Click Add filters and choose In Pipeline, then Pipeline Stage.
  5. Click Save Trigger, add actions, and publish.

Example workflows

  • Entering "Proposal Sent": email the contact a summary, wait three days, then create a follow-up task if no reply.
  • Entering "Won": send a thank-you, add an onboarding tag and start a delivery workflow.
  • Lost with reason "Budget": after a month, send a flexible-pricing offer.
  • Value over 10,000: notify the sales manager when a deal reaches negotiation.

Tips

  • Always add In Pipeline, because stage names are often repeated across pipelines.
  • Use Opportunity Status Changed if you only care about open, won, lost or abandoned.

Good to know: A single drag on the board can start several workflows, so give each its own stage filter to avoid duplicate messages.
