Create and Manage Custom Fields
Standard contact and opportunity fields cover the basics, but every business tracks something the default fields don't capture. Custom fields let you add exactly the data points your business needs — and then use them in forms, workflows, pipelines, and merge fields.
What custom fields can do
Custom fields attach extra information to:
- Contacts — for example, birthday, referral source, or a loyalty tier
- Opportunities — for example, budget range, project timeline, or deal source
Contact fields and opportunity fields are separate — a field created for contacts can't be reused on opportunities, and vice versa.
Field types available
- Short text
- Long text
- Dropdown
- Date picker
- Phone number
- Radio select
- Checkbox group
- URL
- And more
Pick the type that matches how you'll actually use the data — dropdowns and radio selects keep entries consistent, while text fields are best for free-form notes.
Creating a custom field
- Go to Settings → Custom Fields.
- Choose which object the field belongs to — Contact or Opportunity.
- Click Create Field.
- Select the field type.
- Name the field clearly, and optionally assign it to a folder.
- Check the live preview to confirm it looks right.
- Click Create Custom Field.
Keeping fields organized
As you add more custom fields, group related ones into folders — for example, "Property Details" or "Buyer Information" — so record pages stay organized into clear sections instead of a long, unstructured list.
Using custom fields elsewhere
Once created, a custom field is available to reference in forms, surveys, workflows, automations, smart lists, and as a merge field in your emails and texts — so the data you capture in one place can drive personalization and segmentation everywhere else.
