Messenger or Instagram DM Steps Are Not Delivering

When a Messenger or Instagram DM action seems to run but the contact never receives anything, check the following causes, most likely first.

Likely causes

1. The 24-hour window has closed

Both platforms only allow a business to message someone who contacted the connected page or account within the past 24 hours. If the contact last wrote earlier than that, the message cannot be delivered.

Fix: restructure the workflow so the DM goes out right after the interaction, or add an If/Else that falls back to SMS or email when there is no recent conversation.

2. The contact has no social conversation

A contact created from a form or import has no Messenger or Instagram thread, so there is nothing to reply into. The DM needs a contact who originated from a social interaction such as a comment, a DM or a lead ad conversation.

3. The accounts are not connected

Open Settings > Integrations and confirm both the Facebook page and the Instagram account are connected and healthy. For Instagram, the profile must be linked to a Facebook business page. Reconnect if the status shows an error.

4. The message content is blocked

Very long text, unsupported attachments or broken file links can fail. Try a short plain message first, then add attachments back one at a time.

5. The workflow did not reach the step

Open Execution Logs for the contact and look at the step status. If the contact exited earlier because of a filter or a wait, fix that first.

Quick test

  1. Send a message from a personal account to your page or Instagram profile.
  2. Immediately run the workflow for that contact.
  3. If delivery works now, the issue was timing or missing conversation history.

Prevent it

  • Trigger on social events (comments, DMs) rather than generic ones.
  • Reply fast, ideally within minutes.
  • Keep an email or SMS fallback for anyone outside the window.

Good to know: The 24-hour window restarts whenever the contact messages you, so ask a question that invites a reply.
