Temporarily Switch Off a Single Workflow Step

Debugging or testing a variation doesn't require deleting a step and rewiring the canvas. You can disable any step, run your tests, and switch it back on when you're done.

Disable and enable

  1. Open the workflow in Automation > Workflows, in either the standard or advanced builder.
  2. Hover over the step you want to turn off.
  3. Click the pause icon (the Enable/Disable switch).
  4. To bring it back, hover again and switch it on.

A disabled step appears dimmed and carries a Disabled tag.

How it behaves

  • Disabled steps are skipped when the workflow runs, and contacts continue to the next active step. Nobody gets stuck.
  • If the disabled step sits on the only path forward, the workflow bypasses it and carries on with active steps beyond it.
  • To disable an entire branch, switch off each step in that branch.
  • Skipped steps don't use up executions.
  • Execution logs record them as Skipped, so testing stays easy to trace.

When to use it

  • Turn off a Send SMS step while you test the rest of the flow.
  • A/B test by disabling one version of a message.
  • Isolate which step is causing an error.

Things to watch

  • Disabling is one step at a time; there is no bulk switch in the standard builder.
  • If you switch to a builder view that can't show disabled steps, you may be asked to delete or re-enable them first.
  • This is different from pausing whole workflows for a date range, which is a global setting.

Before you publish

Check the canvas for any dimmed steps you forgot about; a disabled welcome message would simply never go out.

Good to know: Name the step something like "TEST OFF" in your notes so you remember to re-enable it.
