Order Form Submission vs Order Placed: Which Trigger to Use

Two similar-sounding triggers react to purchases, and picking the right one depends on whether money has changed hands.

The difference in one line

  • Order Form Submission fires when someone submits an order form on a funnel or website, even if payment is not complete.
  • Order Submitted and Order Placed fire when an actual order is created after payment. If a form submission also leads to a payment, both kinds of trigger can fire.

Order Form Submission filters

  • In Funnel/Website: pick the funnel or site, then optionally a Page Is and a Product Is.
  • Submission Type:
    • Opt-In: contact details entered but the order is not finished. Ideal for cart-style follow-up.
    • Sale: payment completed.
    • Bump: an add-on offer on the checkout page was accepted.
    • Upsell: a post-purchase offer was accepted.

Order Placed filters

Filter by Cart Value with operators such as equals, greater than or less than. For example, thank buyers whose cart is 150 or more and send them a coupon for next time.

Set up Order Form Submission

  1. In Automation > Workflows, click Add New Trigger.
  2. Select Order Form Submission from the Payments group.
  3. Name it, then add the funnel, page, product and submission type filters.
  4. Click Save Trigger.
  5. Put the funnel in test mode, submit an order with dummy details, and check enrollment history.
  6. Publish the workflow.

Which should you pick

Use Opt-In submissions to nurture people who did not finish, Sale or Order Placed to confirm purchases, and Bump or Upsell to tailor receipts and fulfillment.

Good to know: Test every submission type once; each fires separately and a mismatched filter is easy to miss.
