Find an Existing Contact Mid-Workflow with Find Contact
Find Contact searches your contact list using details you provide and brings the matching person into the workflow. It is built for workflows that start without a contact, such as those triggered by an Inbound Webhook that only carries an email address.
Match options
- Standard fields: email, phone, first and last name.
- Custom fields: for example Customer ID or Subscription Tier, as long as the field exists and is filled in.
- External references: store a value like a payment customer ID in a custom field and match on it.
If you choose several fields, all of them must match. You can also add extra emails or phone numbers to broaden the search.
Two paths
The action creates Contact Found and Contact Not Found branches.
- On the found path, update fields, add tags or send messages.
- On the not found path, use Create Contact, send an internal alert, or end the flow.
Set it up
- Add the action from + in the builder.
- Choose the field or fields to search and map their values from the trigger data.
- Save, then build each branch.
- Test with one known and one unknown address.
Example
A booking tool posts a new signup. Find Contact searches by email. If found, the workflow adds a "Booked" tag. If not, it creates the contact first and then tags them.
Good to know: If more than one person could match, add a unique field like email or an external ID so the right record is chosen.
